NIC CUTHBERT

Former swimmer aged 25 years old that, after racing and training at an elite level I recently decided to semi-retire from the sports of marathon swimming and surf life saving.  It has been a dream of mine after many hours tracing the black line of a swimming pool, to break free and conquer the vast landscape and open roads of this great country of ours.

In closing one chapter of my life I feel that now is better time than ever to put back into the community that has contributed to the person I have become.

Before AUSyouthcycle, I was living on the Gold Coast swimming with Denis Cotterell at the Miami Swimming Club and racing for Tugun Surf Life Saving Club.  Prior to that and since leaving high school I completed a Commerce Degree (HR & HRM), worked in a management position at a national Telco, managed large numbers of staff as well as budgets and participated in leadership programs with both Surf Life Saving and Rotary International.  However I didn’t always have it so easy and was also touched by the effect of youth suicide while at high school.

AUSyouthcycle is an ideal opportunity to use our personal experience and take our message to regional areas where we firmly believe we can have a positive impact on the lives of young Australians.

MATTHEW SLADDEN

I am about to celebrate my 26th birthday on the road, and am the second youngest in my family of seven children. I grew up with the large amount of experience and helpful life knowledge that elder siblings can provide.

I have always been active in a number of sports at school, particularly swimming where I captained the school team in my final year. I also juggled such commitments with a large academic workload and involvement with leadership and mentoring programs throughout my senior years.

Since leaving school I have completed two undergraduate bachelors in both Commerce and Economics from Curtin University and the University of WA respectively. I have had the experience of travel, mainly in North America where I spent eight months working at a ski resort and vastly touring the country, driving over 13,000km and backpacking through Mexico. I also travelled to China as a spectator at the Beijing games.

This is a unique opportunity to attribute five months of my life before establishing a career, by putting back into the community and actually make a difference to other people’s lives.

Nic and I met during high school and sharing competitiveness for swimming and academic interest became best of friends.
